Typically, enough information is gathered in an unstructured clinical interview to make a diagnosis. In Dan’s case, he reveals that he binge eats occasionally (once every other week) and then subsequently restricts his diet for a day or two following the binge to compensate. He also sometimes engages in self-induced vomiting (once every couple of months) when he overeats.
However, if we overuse this coping strategy and overeating is a primary strategy of avoiding uncomfortable emotions, additional suffering may be created. Additional suffering may result in the form of unhealthy weight gain and other health-risk factors such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and other problems associated with obesity. Therefore, the original painful emotions still exist, and on top of that is the suffering brought on by the avoidance strategy. Acceptance and commitment therapy encourages individuals to accept the experience of emotional pain as something that is part of any human life.
