Skyraiders could take off from the angled landing area of converted ESSEX class carriers without the use of catapults while the jet fighters and other aircraft used the two catapults at the forward end of the ship.
The strut cover varied in size and shape from one version to another. The catapult bridle hook was painted gloss yellow.
