Although the actual operation of these processes is mysterious and largely beyond our control, some of them – notably memory, imagination, and self-evaluation – are subject to deliberate cultivation. 19 These features of unconscious processes bring them into the ambit of skills. But the case for the contribution of the self-as-divided to autonomy need not depend on the admittedly debatable claim that the unconscious mind is by itself a repository of skills, for consciousness is as much a part of the self-as-divided as the unconscious.
