It was a groundbreaking effort in bear education that retains its impact nearly half a century later. All this effort paid off: during the twelve years from The genealogy of Pooh Alan A. Milne was a novelist, playwright and essayist who wrote frequently for the prestigious London-based magazine Punch. G. Wells, Milne was educated at Cambridge and in later years often expressed frustration that his reputation was based on his children’s stories and not his adult writing. Milne modelled the character of Christopher Robin on his own son, Christopher, who received his now-famous 37 stuffed bear for his first birthday, on August 21, 1921.

But when Canada’s federal government gave the Province of Alberta control over land and resources, it also shrank the park boundaries to exclude any land that had agricultural or forestry value. Today’s small national park still has good bear habitat – just not as much as it needs. The most productive bear country lies outside the park boundary, where bears have to share the lush aspen thickets, spring-fed wetlands and green stream valleys with domestic cattle on neighbouring ranches. Fortunately, this landscape is close to protected bear populations in Montana and the bear-rich Flathead valley of BC.

Garfield Weston Foundation helped the NCC protect more than one hundred square kilometres of ranching landscape from development forever. The NCC’s Waterton Park Front project ultimately raised more than $50-million to purchase conservation easements, retire development rights and, where necessary, buy land outright and then lease it back to ranchers. One of the largest private land conservation efforts in Canada’s history, it secured the future for both bears and ranchers. Blaine Marr’s family ranch in Oil Basin is a secluded swath of exceptionally well cared for native grassland, aspen forest and wetlands where bears and other wildlife thrive.
