These cells do not travel across the surface of the exposed dermis, where, 45 THE DYNAMIC BODY TISSUES being unprotected by an outer keratin layer, they would die of desiccation. They move beneath the surface at a level where both water and nutrients are available, cutting by enzyme action through the obstructing collagen fibres as they go (Winter, 1972). The extra cells needed for this migration are produced by the increased mitotic activity of the basal epidermal cells at the wound edges in response to the weakened chalone action in that region.

Adrenalin also slows the rate of completion of mitosis in any cell that manages to pass the G2 blockage point, but curiously it accelerates the completion of any mitosis that is already in existence when the adrenalin concentration rises (Bullough and Laurence, 1966). The implication is that this slowing action is not direct but is the result of the previous influence of the adrenalin on the G2 phase. The same slowing action can be obtained by raising the G2 chalone concentration, and the conclusion is that the inhibiting action of both these substances is confined to the G2 phase.

Their epidermis was evidently unable to escape from its chronic hypoplasia. It can therefore be suggested that the main function of the adrenal hormones in relation to the chalone control mechanisms may be to provide a regulatory link between the external conditions, especially the amount of food available, and the amount of new tissue that is created daily. A further important point relates to wound healing. One obvious result of wounding may be stress, which would then be expected to slow the healing process by limiting the rate of new cell production.
