One of the more famous of the “mobbers” was Daniel Shays, who gathered and drilled a formidable force of about 1,000 men. The rebels’ grievances included a poor economy, the imprisonment of small farmers for their debts, and court-ordered land forfeitures. Shays kept his force intact during the fall and winter of 1786 and even threatened to march on Boston. This infringement on the right of self-governance, along with similar acts, went a long way in arousing colonial dissatisfaction. Another chief contributor to the Revolution was the general writ of assistance which empowered officers of the English customs service to break into and search colonial homes for alleged smuggled goods. Once issued, the writ remained in force throughout the lifetime of the sovereign and for six months thereafter.

In reality, the nomination was a mere formality since it was a foregone conclusion among the delegates that Washington would preside.
