Signifying diaspora One of the most interesting semiotic devices Mai uses in the context of obeah, a prop significantly never spoken of but referred to only in the didascales (or stage directions), is ‘a large Afro wig’ (1, 1: 141). In the opening scene this wig sits on the middle of the table in Mai’s bedsit. Mai puts it on before she opens the door to Enid, who has come for a reading. The wig thus acts as a liminal marker, a threshold symbol between Mai’s position as a private individual and her role as an obeah woman.

The chapter analyses the theatricalization of the spatialized problematic of inhabiting diasporic spaces, suggesting, in alignment with Brah’s argument, that the diaspora effect impacts not only on those who migrate but also on those who stay in one location. Chapter three on ‘Geographies of un/belonging’ investigates the articulation of re/turns to countries of origin by second-generation migrants. For these children of the diaspora their parents’ country of origin does not necessarily figure as the ‘homeland’ but may generate a new sense of unbelonging where difference is articulated not through skin colour but through the attitudes and behaviours which secondgeneration migrants have acquired as a consequence of living in a racialized and racist western context.

Diaspora, then, is a permanent condition for first-generation migrants who have to negotiate between their culture and community of origin and the society into which they have migrated. Gullyman’s story of a rise and fall, in the narrative directly related to his attempt to integrate into English society, presents the key dilemma faced by all the characters in ‘Leave Taking’ and played out in its narrative: how 38 Diasporic subjects to negotiate, and not merely negotiate but negotiate successfully, the entre-deux of diasporic existence.
